Effexor (venlafaxine) or Pristiq (desvenlafaxine) may cause birth defects!

Effexor, also referred to as venlafaxine, is a serotonin norepinephrine reuptake inhibitor (SNRI) antidepressant prescribed for the management of major depressive disorder, anxiety, and panic attacks. Antidepressants such as Effexor and Pristiq may cause birth defects in newborns, according to information that has been emerging since 2005.

Babies have been subjected to Effexor ahead of birth may be at a heightened risk of developing severe birth defects. These unwanted effects can sometimes include lung and heart defects. Although little studies have been done around the risk of Effexor birth defects, medications which are much like Effexor happen to be associated with serious risks for newborns.

  • Neural-tube defects (brain and spinal cord)
  • Pulmonary (lung) defects
